Envelope Pillowcase

These pillows are super easy to make as each pillow only uses one piece of fabric.

Transfer your bedroom using pretty prints or colours. It’s nice to have a change of pillowcases for each season. Mix and match your pillowcases to match your quilt covers and to give your bedroom a refreshed look.

Requirements List:

  • Fabric for each pillowcase 2 x 50cm x 170cm
  • 3/4 x spools of overlocking thread
  • coordinating sewing machine thread
  • Overlocker
  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
  • Iron and ironing board

Cutting:

Measure up an existing pillow or pillowcase that is the size you would like to create. Then add an extra 5cm on the width (2.5cm each side) and add on an extra 20cm on the total length. This gives you 5cm for each hem and 10cm for the folded over edge on each pillowcase. Our measurements were: 2 x 50cm x 170cm rectangles.

  1. Press over each of the short ends 1.25cm, then fold over again. Press and pin in place.
  2. Stitch using a regular straight stitch, or you can choose a decorative stitch in a contrasting thread for some extra detail.

  1. Measure 10cm from one edge and mark with chalk or soluble fabric marker. Fold over on this line and press, right sides together.

  1. Bring up the other short edge to your folded line, right sides of the fabric together and pin the long edges in place. The 10cm folded over edge will be “trapped inside”.
  2. Thread your overlocker, setting up for either a three or four-thread overlock. Overlock the long edges.
  3. Turn right side out and press.
