Orange is the New Bag Tag

Does your bag blend in with everyone elses? Stamp your mark with these cool bag tags

Level:Beginner

Skills Learnt:Straight Stitch, Pivoting, Sewing Curves, Sewing with Felt, Cutting a Pattern.

Shopping List:

  • 4 x Pieces of Felt:
    • 1 x Orange
    • 1 x Yellow
    • 1 x Dark Green
    • 1 x Light Green
  • Yellow or Orange Cotton to match
  • Green Cotton to match
  • 20cm Ribbon (make sure the ribbon width will fit the press studs).
  • Press Studs
  • Printed Pattern (free)
  • Scissors
  • Pins

Cutting

    1. Cut out the paper pattern pieces.
    2. Pin the pattern piece to the felt and cut out:
      • Piece A – Orange Felt and cut out 2 pieces.
      • Piece B – Yellow Felt and cut out 14 pieces.
      • Piece C – Dark Green Felt and cut out 2 pieces.
      • Piece D – Light Green Felt and cut out 4 pieces.
      • Piece E – Light Green Felt and cut out 4 pieces.

        1. Wind the bobbin (in orange/yellow thread first).
        2. Thread the machine.
        3. Insert the bobbin.
        4. Bring the bobbin thread to the top.

    Sewing the Orange:

        1. Lay 7 orange segments (B) onto one of the orange skins (A) to check their placement.
        2. Pin and sew one segment at a time, right side up. Complete all seven segments.
        3. Repeat steps 7 & 9 with the other side of the orange.
        4. Place the two wrong sides of the orange together, with one end of the ribbon sandwiched between the oranges and pin together.
        5. Topstitch (straight sew) around the two pieces and reverse over the ribbon to ensure the stitching is strong.
        6. Hand sew one side of the press stud onto the orange piece, and the other side of the press stud onto the end of the ribbon.

    Orange StepsSewing the Lime:

        1. Lay 2 of the ½ lime segments (D) onto one of the lime skins (C) and 2 of the lime segments (E) to check their placement, with the 2 E segments in the middle.
        2. Pin and sew one segment at a time, right side up. Complete all 4 segments.
        3. Repeat steps 11 & 12 with the other side of the lime.
        4. Place the two wrong sides of the lime together, with one end of the ribbon sandwiched between the oranges and pin together.
        5. Topstitch (straight sew) around the two pieces and reverse over the ribbon to ensure the stitching is strong.
        6. Hand sew one side of the press stud onto the orange piece, and the other side of the press stud onto the end of the ribbon.
